Beginning of a remarkable journey

Sewmini’s AIESEC journey and path to leadership began at the Winter Induction for the term 22.23. Coincidentally, this was her very first time visiting the university as an undergraduate. Being the first ever event to attend in the university, she was extremely attentive throughout the whole day. Despite her apprehension about being exposed to a new culture, she was equally enthusiastic about AIESEC.

First impressions

The session conducted by then People’s Management Vice President, Hiruni Udumullaarachchi was the deciding factor in her decision to become an AIESECer. Sewmini still has vivid memories of the flair with which she delivered her speech and her capacity to compel an audience. So she resolved to be a leader like her, to make a lasting impression on the lives of others. Thus began the AIESEC journey of Sewmini.

Growing and leading

Regardless of the concerns of not being selected, she applied for the post of People’s Management Coordinator, once the application processes began. She also applied for the matching team in the Incoming Global Talent Function. She was successful in obtaining these front and back office roles. What piqued her attention was the People’s Management team and the prospect of connecting and assisting others. Next, she applied for the organizing committee of Sparkles. Although she hesitated to apply, others who believed in her potential pushed her to do so. She acted as the Organizing Committee Vice President for Events and Logistics for the event. Sewmini recalls the Organizing Committee experience as challenging yet rewarding. Her ability to bear the title of the spirit of the month after the event, stands as a testament to it.

The next term, she applied for the leadership body and was elected as the International Relations and Matching manager and the People’s Management manager. She was the organizing committee president for the recently held Winter Induction 2023. Currently, she is an Organizing Committee member for the National Leadership Development Seminar.

Word for the newbies

As an AIESECer, Sewmini emphasizes the value of hard work. She firmly believes in perseverance in the face of adversity. One of the things she recalls is a quote that stuck with her from the last induction. That is, “AIESEC is a kitchen and you should be the one who is going to prepare the best meal for you”. This actually has been a significant motivation for Sewmini to apply and explore the platform creating her journey.

Hence, the message for the newbies is never to be afraid and always grab the opportunities even when you are in doubt. And once you begin working, take responsibility for everything you do.
