All you can change is yourself, but sometimes that changes everything!

What is Sustainable Development?

I’m sure all of you have heard about sustainable development. Sustainable development is defined as “ a constraint upon present consumption to ensure that future generations will inherit a resource base that is no less than the inheritance of the previous generation.” according to ScienceDirect. It’s the concept of using the resources we have today without robbing what belongs to the future generation.

When did it all start?

Sustainable development was the concept of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro back in 1992. By now, as you already know 17 sustainable development goals were set by the United Nations to be achieved by the year 2030 which are commonly referred to as SDGs. Almost all the countries in the world are doing their best to achieve these goals by the end of 2030.

Why is sustainable development important?

In this world, everybody does not have access to the same amount of resources. Some countries have access to more useful resources than others. However, nobody in this world should be deprived of any resources. Everybody should have access to good living standards, education and good job opportunities, etc regardless of who they are and where they come from. With sustainable development, we can make it happen. Therefore I hope you now understand the immense importance of this concept.

How can you take part in this?

Since this is a concept that needs to be exercised at an international level, you must be wondering how you could be a part of sustainable development. However, it is so much easier than you think. Even the simplest act from your side can contribute greatly towards sustainable development.

For a start, you can turn off all the electric appliances in your household when they are not in use. Not only that but you can also use energy-friendly light bulbs to save more energy. Most importantly you can make maximum use of daylight as well.

One of the most efficient ways you can contribute to this is Recycling. No matter what you use, you can recycle them. It can be paper, plastic, polythene, glass, and aluminum, etc whatever it is you can recycle it. Not only that but you can also reuse some of the items that you use daily. For example, you can reuse the plastic bottle of water that you bought on the way until its expiration date.

This may even sound funny to you. However, taking shorter baths or showers can help greatly to sustainable development. This might sound impossible, but it is true. In addition to all of that, you can reduce your use of paper. For that, you can cut back on the papers and use your mobile phone and the internet to do what you need to do, such as paying your bills online. In addition, you can also refuse the printed bill that you get at the end of a transaction.

Be a part of the solution!

Change starts with you! Do not wait for things to magically turn around. It’s you who can make the impossible happen. Don’t just do what needs to be done. Share your newfound knowledge with everyone you know. Today is the day you make the change. So, let’s start our journey towards sustainable development together with AIESEC. We as the youth are committed to make our world a better place through sustainable development.
